Alternative Spring Break

Alternative break trips are student-led, university-sponsored trips. They’re a great way to experience a different community and explore social justice issues through service alongside communities.  While you travel, you can plan to do service, learn about social issues, live simply, and get to know your fellow travelers and host community. Administrative or academic faculty will be present on trips to support the learning experience and maintain administrative aspects.

This year there will be three separate programs offered. They are open to all students.
1.   Alternative Fall Break. October 30th-November 1st. We will spend the weekend at the Heifer International Farm in Rutland, Massachusetts performing farm chores while learning about alleviating global poverty through sustainable farming. This trip is open on a first come basis, but space is VERY limited. Signups will begin today, September 14 at 11:00a.m. in the Office of Campus Activities & Civic Engagement, Student Center 231. There is a trip fee of $25 per person that covers transportation, meals and programming.
2.   Interfaith Immersion & Service Weekend. November 13th-15th. We will visit a local mosque, synagogue and church for services over the weekend. We will also work on a group service project Saturday afternoon. The group will live together during the weekend in a communal living space on campus. Much like all Alternative Break opportunities, this weekend will focus on reflection, personal growth and development. The weekend is open to ALL students of any and all faiths, as well as those of no specific religious or spiritual tradition. This trip is open on a first come basis, but space is VERY limited. Signups will begin October 1st at 11:00a.m. in the Office of Campus Activities & Civic Engagement, Student Center 231.
3.   Alternative Spring Break. March 13th-20th. Applications are now available.  This will be UB’s 10th annual Alternative Spring Break. Applications are now available in the Office of Campus Activities & Civic Engagement, Student Center 231. The applications and two letters of recommendation are due September 25th. There is also an interview as part of the selection process. This year, for the first time, UB will be offering two trips so that more students will have the opportunity to participate. There will be an international trip and a regional trip. The students will learn of the destinations after they are selected to participate. ASB is open to ALL students. There is a $300 fee to participate. There are opportunities for fundraising to reduce the student’s participation fee. Students selected for the international trip will also be responsible for their own passport, visa and vaccination costs.
