'MORE Retreat - September 22-23

Attention Sophomores!

Students, faculty, and staff on campus have come together to create something special that meets Sophomore Students where you are in you college careers. 

The kickoff event, the ‘MORE Retreat, is an opportunity for 45 sophomores to attend an overnight off campus retreat that will focus on leadership development and goal setting.  On September 22-23, we will be travelling to the Greenkill YMCA Camp in Huguenot, NY.  There, we will be learning about ourselves and each other through leadership development activities, reflection, and camp facilitated activities.  We’ll leave campus at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, the 22nd and return by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday the 23rd.  Space is limited, so stop by the Office of Campus Activities and Civic Engagement, Room 231 in the Student Center to reserve your spot. A $10 deposit is required, but will be returned to you when you get on the bus.

 

Alternative Fall Break

Heifer International Farm

Rutland, MA

$25

Come and learn about how to alleviate global poverty through sustainable agriculture at the Heifer International Farm in Rutland, Massachusetts. Transportation from UB will be provided. Space is VERY limited. Open to ALL students. Signups will start at 11am on September 18th in the Office of Campus Activities & Civic Engagement, Student Center 231.

 

Alternative Break for a Day

September 30th

9am-2pm

$5

What are Alternative Fall Break and Alternative Spring Break like? Come and find out as we work on a similar project for the day. Volunteers will restore part of the Norwalk River Valley Trail in Ridgefield by clearing debris and invasive plants. Experts will be on hand to discuss the connections between open space, native plants and wildlife and water quality. Lunch and volunteer tee-shirt will be provide. Wear long pants to prevent ticks. Bring a water bottle, work gloves, clippers and/or shovels. Limited supplies available. Transportation from UB will be provided. March 11-18, 2018

Applications for this amazing community service, leadership and personal growth experience are now available in the Office of Campus Activities & Civic Engagement, Student Center room 231. Applications are due 9/29.

 

Volunteer Opportunities

Connecticut Food Bank

On September 21st the bus will depart from University of Bridgeport at 12:30 p.m. and return by 3:30 p.m. Volunteers will sort food at the Fairfield warehouse of Connecticut Food Bank. To sign up, please email Jennifer Turner at jenniftu@bridgeport.edu

 

Translation Services

Students are needed to translate for recent immigrants. Languages needed are Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Swahili, French, Amharis and Tigrinya. If interested, please email Jennifer Turner at jenniftu@bridgeport.edu

 

ChowdaFest

On Saturday, September 30th from 2:00 p.m. – 5 p.m. volunteers are needed to help set-up tents, put out tables, etc. the day before the Chowdafest at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. Volunteers will get free admission (regularly $20) to the event on Sunday. To sign up, please email Jennifer Turner at jenniftu@bridgeport.edu

 

PK5K

The office of Alumni & Family Engagement encourages you to participate in the Purple Knight 5k on Sunday, October 8 during Homecoming Weekend! Run just for fun or create teams and challenge your friends! The race will start at Mandeville Hall and take you around the UB campus and through Seaside Park.

Registration is only $10 for UB students and includes a free 5k tee-shirt and breakfast at Marina Dining Hall after the run.
